Karengo
is
a brown seaweed (sea vegetable) similar to the more commonly known
Dulse. It grows
along the coast of New Zealand in some of the most pristine ocean
waters left on the planet. Karengo is hand harvested along
the rocky
coast of New Zealand ’s south island near Kaikoura. It is
then washed
and dried at low temperature (less than 40 C). The
New Zealand
government carefully regulates the harvest of Karengo to make sure that
the environment is not depleted.
All
this makes Karengo a very unique and premium sea vegetable product.
Anyone who likes Dulse will love Karengo. Karengo is softer
and less
salty than Dulse and is more versatile in salads, dressings and other
main dishes. Try it with avocado as a super healthy
alternative to
other salty snacks. Or try mixing it with fresh tomatoes,
herbs and
cucumbers for a great tasting and mineral potent main salad.

General
Seaweed Health Benefits
There
is no family of foods more protective against radiation and
environmental pollutants than sea vegetables. All sea vegetables
contain radio-protective properties. One of the more powerful
protective elements in sea vegetables is sodium alginate. The alginic
acid found in sea vegetation acts as a binding or chelating agent in
the body for the radioactive strontium 90 which is now found in
vegetables, milk and meat. Not only does alginic acid flush out
strontium 90 from the digestive tract, but it also extracts and
chelates it from the bone marrow and bloodstream. Researchers at McGill
University (Canada) are finding that this extends to all heavy metals.
After
the Nagasaki bombing occurred, people who ate a strict macrobiotic diet
-including brown rice and miso soup with loads of sea vegetables -did
not suffer from radiation poisoning, even though some were within a
mile of the explosion!
