Sandalwood
Essential Oil Benefits and Uses
by Gabrielle
Souczek, ©2008
Sandalwood essential oil (santalum album) is one of
the world's oldest essential oils. It has been steam
distilled from the heart wood of the sandalwood tree in Southeast Asia
for over 4000 years.
Sandalwood has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years
to promote skin revitalization, relaxation and
meditation. Due to its balsamic, earthy smell
combined with it's ability to help prevent the aging of skin,
sandalwood is often a base in cosmetics and perfumes.
Today, 100% pure sandalwood essential oil is in short supply, as the
trees that it is made from are in a phase of
re-growth. It takes at least 30 years for a tree to
mature to the point where it can be used to produce sandalwood oil.
For that reason there are many synthetic or adulterated oils claiming
to be sandalwood on the market. To make
sure you get the benefits of this powerful oil, is important
to make sure that you purchase only therapeutic-grade sandalwood.

Sandalwood is an excellent oil for the skin. It can
help heal acne, reduce wrinkles and dissolve some scar
tissues. Apply directly on the skin or mix with a
few drops of pure vegetable oil. As a perfume, it
lasts 8-10 hours.
Sandalwood is also known to enhance deep sleep and promote
relaxation. It is high in chemicals that stimulate the pineal
gland to produce melatonin, which in turn enhances the immune system
and boosts energy. You can apply the oil on the chest, the
forehead and temples to release tension and promote meditation
Sandalwood stimulates the production of hormones and is held as a
powerful aphrodisiac.
Another way to use sandalwood is to apply on a hot moist towel and
place over the chest. This can help with coughs,
and other respiratory problems.
Sandalwood mixes well with other essential oils and can be found in
various blends and recipes.
