An Essential Oil Remedy For
Sunburn
by Gabrielle
Souczek, ©2008
The best way to prevent sunburn
is to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. However, if you do
get a sunburn, essential oils can help provide quick pain relief and
can
speed healing.
The most common essential oil to use as a remedy for sunburns is
lavender. Sprinkle 5-10 drops of lavender oil on the sunburned area and
spread evenly with gentle strokes. Then apply coconut oil on
top
to seal the lavender oil in. Repeat 5-10 times daily.
Make
sure to use coconut oil and not another vegetable oil.
Coconut
oil is a powerful healing oil on its own and will help the skin stay
hydrated, help repair damaged cells and in many cases will prevent
peeling.
In addition, you can make an aromatherapy mist of lavender, distilled
water and
pure aloe vera gel to spray on the sunburn regularly
throughout the day.
Caution: before you use lavender on the skin, make sure that it is 100%
pure therapeutic-grade oil only. Often lavender oil
is adulterated, cut with chemicals or mixed with inferior lavendin
oil. Using these inferior oils can actually harm
the
skin.

Other essential oils that can be helpful in relieving and healing
sunburn are helichrysum, rose, and sandalwood.
Mix any of these oils equally with coconut oil and apply on
the
skin as needed.
