Book Review: Whole Being Health -
"The Way Of The Peaceful Warrior"
by Dan Millman

Iin this article, I want to switch gears and write about what I call
"whole being health." To do that I'm going to refer to a
great little book I recently read called "The Way of the Peaceful
Warrior."
The book is a somewhat fictionalized autobiography of Dan Millman's
journey toward inner peace as a young man. What's
interesting about the book for the purposes of this article is that
even though Dan is a world class gymnast and in the prime of fitness,
he is far from healthy. Dan is incredibly strong
physically, able to complete amazing feats of strength and balance,
that most of us could never dream of. He is also
good looking, has many girlfriends and is generally very popular on his
college campus. All this, and Dan is still miserably unhappy
and given to bouts of anger and depression.
This description of Dan is an excellent reminder for us not to confuse
physical strength or fitness, or even outward beauty for true
health. That is something that can't simply be
achieved by exercise, special diets or spa treatments
alone.
Whole being health comes from within, starting with inner
peace, and radiates outward. For most of
us, that's easier said than done. And I guess
that's why Millman devotes the bulk of his book to describing how he
learned to experience it.
At one of his low points, Dan meets a mysterious and wise gas station
attendant that he calls “Socrates.” Through the
unorthodox and sometimes magical teaching methods of his mentor, Dan
learns to transcend his anger, unhappiness and ultimately his
fear.
It's an intense journey that involves the ultimate frustration for Dan
when he loses his ability to compete in gymnastics after a motorcycle
accident that he had while he was angry. Dan
doesn’t give up easily. He perseveres and over time goes on
to experience what he calls “the wisdom of silence” which frees him
from the struggle that had defined most of his previous
experience In that
way Dan finds peace and becomes truly healthy and balanced.
And from that health the author Dan Millman has gone on to write books
that have inspired millions of people.
If you haven't yet read "The Way Of The Peaceful Warrior" it's an
uplifting and easy read that will likely bring you some insights about
living a problem free, struggle free life.
